Critique Evening

Tonight’s feature was a critique evenings which Dave Brennan had volunteered to lead.

Dave is a skilled and experienced photographer with a wide range of areas of expertise including still life, portraiture, landscape, smoke art as well as wedding photography.

Members of the club had been invited to submit up to 2 images anonymously to a nominated adjudicator who stripped all data from the image which may identify the photographer before submitting them to Dave for his consideration.

Before he began, Dave reiterated that a critique is not a photography competition but rather a method of disciplined, systematic analysis of a photograph. It is not, nor is it intended to be a criticism or a negative review. It is one person's assessment of the image.

As has proved to be a feature of these evenings, the images offered turned out to be a real mixed bag.

Dave began the discussion on each image with his initial thoughts on the subject matter, composition and where appropriate, the processing of the image.

He then moved on to discussing the image with the offering alternatives that could be considered on approaching to the subject including the use of Lightroom/Photoshop which he ustilised to demonstrate his point.

It is a recognition of the respect that the membership have of Dave’s ability that no feathers were ruffled, however that did not prevent some humorous,  lively and friendly banter.

All in all, another successful evening demonstrated by the high attendance and the appreciation shown at the meeting’s close.

Water Water Everywhere and Not a Drop to Drink

This evening’s meeting was a theme night when members were asked to bring with them one or more images on the chosen subject of water.

There were no hard and fast rules about the subject matter other that images should represent H2O in one of its physical forms, namely gas (i.e. steam - which is in fact  invisible but  water vapour was acceptable), liquid or solid.

Again it could fresh water, salty water, still water, moving water, still life or whatever else took the photographer's  fancy.

Before things started, we were able to welcome 3 potential new members, Nicola Cookson, Tony Flynn and Jeff Balmer who attended the club for the first time.

We also learned that member Dave Fletcher had recently received a Mark of Excellence award in a photography competition on the ‘I shot It’ website.  Appropriate to the evening's theme the image was of huge waves crashing over Seaham Pier.

Picture
I usually give a written description of these meetings, however as a picture allegedly paints a thousand word, I thought I’d let a small handful the many excellent images taken by members and submitted covering the varied themes of water do all the talking today.
