Hadrian's Wall - Feb 2012
Write-up by Derek Rootham
Steel Rigg to Housteads ~ Cawfields Quarry~ St Oswalds Church
Some of the club members Dan Tony John and Derek met at West Moor Sunday 19 February @ 10:00am.
The idea was to get to the wall when the sun was high enough to light the north side the wall. The temperature drop from Newcastle to where the starting point to Steel Rigg car park was significant. Due to the icy conditions the ground started off hard underfoot but softened later.
It was quite a trek to the first fort and Sycamore Gap (Robin Hood Tree). After photographing the Gap we worked our way up to Wall Crag’s taking shots along the way. We were informed politely but strongly by a ranger that walking on the wall was “prohibited” The good light provided us with the opportunity for great landscapes showing the wall winding through Northumberland.
When we returned to Steel Rigg car park a decision was made to travel to Cawfields Quarry. This was for investigation rather than image making but the opportunity proved too good to leave the gear in the bags and some striking images of the man made cliffs were taken, a good few from a point using the cliff side as a wind break giving the water a chance to settle for good reflections
Finally although tired but happy we stopped off at St Oswalds Church Chollerford for some late evening shots of the church and Church Grounds.
Dan isn’t the first and certainly won’t be the last to forget that it is always good practice to check what mode your camera has been set to prior to shooting, as some images were “Lost” due to an incorrect white balance setting.
Another great, if cold, day out with plenty of photographic opportunities for all be it cold and exhausting.
