Durham - March 2012
Wtire-up by Derek Rootham
Club members Craig, Sam, Dan, Tony, John, and Derek met at West Moor Sunday 25 March @ 07:30am. Which was an effort after realising the clocks went forward the night before, so it felt like a 06:30 start!!
The group arrived at the Price Bishops car park at which point the fog that had been forecast to be a major problem, which was probably one of the reasons why there wasn’t too may folk on the river walkway early on, started to burn off.
The river walk was very handy to the rear of the car park and the first Bridge, the Elvet, with no wind to speak of on the Wear gave excellent reflections. Until the Durham rowing clubs came through with anything from single skulls to an eight!
Then Sam, fresh from his recent success, pulled out his new pride and joy and quite rightly being a bit embarrassed at having purchased a Nikon d300, then proceeded to locate what is a usually shy Song Thrush collecting nesting materials and building a nest just over our noses.
The group rounded the corner of the river walk and due to the River Wear being “mill pond still” were able to get some great images of the South Bailey bridge and mill house on the opposite bank.
We crossed the river over the Framwellgate Bridge to get the “Iconic” west view of the Cathedral but the strong sunlight needed to be behind us maybe a future trip!
The group decided to go to the Cathedral via Saddler Street where time was taken to photography the facade, prior to entering the Cathedral to take images of the central courtyard and covered walkways. The group then had a well earned rest with coffee and teas in the well appointed Cathedral Cafe.
Finally having decided the town centre was filling up and not having an idea where to go to next the group decided to visit Souter Lighthouse. Yet another great, very hot day out with plenty of photographic opportunities for all!
